FIX: Delete your DCIM folder in the internal storage

Steps:
1. Make a backup of your DCIM folder (I just stored a local copy on my PC) so you can restore your pictures later
2. Delete the DCIM folder from your internal storage
(note: if you delete the folder and bring up the camera, you'll notice it has no problem working - except it asks you to mount an SD before it lets you take a picture)
3. Reboot
4. Pull up the camera app and snap a pic - this will create a new, empty DCIM folder in root
